The cloth

Most clothing pages describe a feeling. This one gives you the numbers, says what each one does, and lets you decide whether the difference is worth anything to you. Nothing below is a claim about Hardman UK; it is how heavyweight jersey works.

The specification

What is in the garment
207gsm
Six point one ounces a square yard. A supermarket tee runs 140 to 150; a premium one starts around 180. This is above both, which is what makes it hang instead of cling.
100% ring-spun cotton
Ring-spinning twists and thins the fibre before it is knitted, so the yarn is finer and stronger than open-end cotton at the same weight. Heavy and soft are not opposites; this is how you get both.
Garment-dyed
Dyed after the shirt is made up rather than before. The colour goes into the cloth rather than onto it, so the black wears down soft instead of going grey, and no two are identically black on day one.
7/8 inch double-needle topstitching
Two parallel rows at every hem instead of one. It is the seam that decides whether a heavy tee still hangs square after fifty washes.
Relaxed cut
Straight through the body, square at the shoulder. Cut to sit on a frame rather than to describe one.
One colour, one place
White on black, across the chest, and nothing anywhere else. No hem tab, no sleeve hit, no back neck print.

The questions

Asked plainly

What does gsm mean on a t-shirt?

Grams per square metre: the weight of the cloth itself, measured over a fixed area. It is the one number that tells you what a tee will feel like before you touch it, and it is the number most brands leave off the page. A supermarket tee runs 140 to 150gsm. A high-street premium one starts around 180. Ours is 207.

Is heavier always better?

No, and anyone who says so is selling one thing. Heavy cloth hangs rather than clings, holds a shoulder line, and survives being washed twice a week for years. It is also warmer and takes longer to dry. What heavy is reliably better at is looking like the same garment in year three that it was in week one.

What is garment-dyeing and why does it matter?

The shirt is made up first and dyed afterwards, rather than being cut from cloth that was already black. The colour goes into the garment rather than sitting on the surface of the yarn, so it wears down soft instead of going grey and patchy, and no two pieces are identically black on day one. It is a slower way to make a black tee and it is the reason this one ages the way it does.

What is ring-spun cotton?

A spinning method that twists and thins the fibre before it is knitted, giving a finer and stronger yarn than the cheaper open-end process at the same weight. It is why a 207gsm ring-spun tee is soft rather than board-like. Heavy and soft are not opposites; the spin is how you get both.

What is double-needle topstitching?

Two parallel rows of stitching at a hem instead of one. It is unglamorous and it is the seam that decides whether a heavy tee still hangs square after fifty washes, because a single row carries all the load of cloth that weighs half again what it is designed for.

How should it fit?

Relaxed and straight through the body, square at the shoulder. It is cut to sit on a frame rather than to describe one. If you want it closer, size down one; the cloth has very little give, so a size down is a real change rather than a suggestion.

That is the whole argument. The range it is made about.
